No longer accepting custom orders on Etsy

So I am no longer accepting custom orders on my Etsy websites. If you already got your order in and spoke to me, you are fine.

I got swamped with orders and am working on those with about 4 weeks until teachers return to work.

Also, when I say that I am no longer accepting custom orders, this applies to individuals only. This does not include shops or wholesale, although that production will slow down significantly once I return to online classes on August 28th.

Coming soon (about two weeks) to the Wiccan Treasures Etsy shop (Morgan needs to do pictures after his next deadline).

Watching sufferers of Craft Show Delusion Disorder

Freshly fired jewelry pieces in the kiln.
Today, I was reading an article (blog post) over at The Survival Mom and she mentioned Craft Show Delusion Disorder (CSDD), and I could not help laughing--because I have seen this firsthand at both craft shows and in my regular profession.

As a writer, I have noticed (especially now that you can publish your own ebook though places like Smashwords) that everyone thinks that they can be a writer...which might be true; after all, I can do it, and I am not the shiniest apple in the barrel. Of course, the self-published market has became one giant slush pile as a result of this mindset (at least, I have cashed checks from magazines in the print market before going indie). But the trend does count down on the number of people who have a great idea, and want me to write it up for fifty percent of the net, so that is a positive...I guess.

I can understand why everyone thinks that they can be a writer...it requires little equipment, and we all get told in school how great our writing is by our peers (no one ever tells a friend or classmate that their writing blows chunks). But I have watched people at craft shows (which my wife has made me help at) suffer from Craft Show Delusion Disorder about crafts that they should not be suffering the delusion over.

Right in front of the two of us. And one of us happens to be the ceramic artist; the other just is a knuckle dragging spouse brought to the show to lift heavy things...and be bored out of his cotton-picking mind.

It is the people who suffer CSDD that believe that they can reproduce my wife's pottery that fascinate me. I have watched people believe that they can reproduce paintings, drawings, and jewelry...some of which I can understand believing that one can do (not everything at a craft show is top quality work). But my wife's pottery?!

My wife has been doing pottery longer than I have known her--she has twenty-three years of experience doing ceramics. And in the seventeen years I have known her, the product has improved greatly. I have lost track of the number of mortar and pestles that I have photographed for her over the years.

And we have watched people with just a semester of pottery under their belt, who have not touched clay in years, plus have none of the required equipment (an awful big expense), believe that they could make what my wife is making. Ok, maybe they could make a mortar and pestle...but it will probably look like a melted marshmallow. For the record, I am the person who does shop at the local college's biannual pottery club sale--and the stuff I see there, my wife would call seconds (items that are flawed and possibly buried never to be seen again by any living human being)--and that is what a semester or two of pottery class produces.

Is there a cure for Craft Show Delusion Disorder? Actually, yes--become a professional craftsperson yourself. I find that artists tend to be realistic (and far too busy with their own specialty) about what they can and cannot do (which is why a certain amount of barter happens among the artists at a craft show).

In other news: my wife's Facebook fanpage recently gained its hundredth fan, and new items are currently being listed on the Celtic Soul Jewelry and Pottery Etsy shop page.

More cork jars available on Etsy

Think of the magic you can do with these jars.
Another item that I was taking photos of were a new butch of small cork jars that my wife hand-throws on the potter's wheel. I was experimenting with the camera again, trying to learn how to take better photos...with mixed results (my wife, the art teacher would not give me a passing grade for this photo).

Now, I like this photo--my wife doesn't. It was an experiment. One of the difficulties that I have taking photos of her pottery is that the glaze is so shiny, and occasionally the camera I am using has a difficult time recording the true color of the glaze. So in this photo, I was experimenting to see if a white background would help. My wife disapproves of the picture because I used wrinkled paper. *sigh*

These corked herb jars are available on her Etsy--Celtic Soul Jewelry and Pottery page for $18 (American) apiece.

More mortar and pestles available on Etsy

Cobalt blue mortar and pestle.
The last couple of days, I have been taking pictures of pottery that my wife is putting up on her Esty--Celtic Soul Jewelry and Pottery page. Today, she posted five new mortar and pestles (various colors). My personal favorite this bunch of photos (of the mortars that is) was the cobalt blue mortar and pestle against the purple background. For those who have not heard me cuss about it, the cobalt blue glaze is really shiny and hard to take good photos of (especially if I am trying to show its actual color). This shot actually shows you its actual color, so I am very happy with the photo. This particular cobalt blue mortar and pestle is available for $19 (American)--though she did not use this photo on the sales page. (We seldom agree about the photos which should be used...but that is a post for another day, isn't it?)

So many mortar and pestles to choose from.

Two of the doggy paw bowls

There is a video walk around of two doggy paw bowls that my wife makes on the potter's wheel. One of them is Royal Blue; the other is Forest Green. Both are food and dishwasher safe because pets should not have to worry about things like that. Both are available from my wife's Celtic Soul Jewelry and Pottery Etsy store.

Cobalt Blue Mortar and Pestle

Here is a video clip of the two Cobalt Blue mortar and pestles that my wife has available in her Celtic Soul Jewelry and Pottery Etsy shop. [Note that I linked to her main shop page, rather than a deep-link; she has other mortar and pestles in different colors available also. Plus, I wasn't sure which one to choose to link to.] She has been making mortar and pestles for fifteen years now. They are food safe, as well as dishwasher and microwave safe.

Pansy Purple cork jar

Here is a video clip of the Pansy Purple wheel-thrown cork jar that my wife has available for sale in her Etsy Celtic Soul Jewelry and Pottery store. This is one of those pieces that digital media (whether still or motion) does not reproduce real well--the actual color of the jar is deeper than the digital media shows it. On picture days, this particular purple color is a color that I struggle to take good pictures of--someday, I will figure out the right settings to use--I hope.

Oasis Blue Kitty Paw mug video clip

This is one of the kitty paw mugs that my wife makes. It is Oasis Blue on the outside and Mottled Blue on the inside. The paw print is from a stamp that my wife made from an impression from our cat Apollo when he was a kitten. This mug, which is food safe and both microwave and dishwasher safe, is one of the items that my wife is selling in her Etsy store.

Some new work is about to be uploaded

Loyal employee sets up jewelry pieces for the photographer.
Regular followers of my wife's work will have noticed that it has been awhile since she has posted any new items to her Etsy store. Basically, she has been drowning in the work for her Masters program. Despite this, the occasional piece of jewelry has been completed.

The resulting pieces of jewelry have been slowly filling up my photography box (I have a box where the pieces that need photos taken of are stored until I get done doing my job). Yesterday, because of the nice weather and because I could not stand looking at another piece of homework, I went outside to take some photos.

This thrilled Mortimer, the outside cat and studio assistant. He had great fun getting into the various shots, eventually taking over the entire shoot.

I am not sure when Toni is going to be posting the new items--I am not sure that I took enourgh photos--but I can tell you that it will be soon.
